Joe Harriott discography - 2...
This is the second page of the Joe Harriott discography covering his recordings from 1961 to 1970. A brief biography and a discography from 1954 to 1960 are available on another page...

Double bass player Coleridge Goode knew Joe better than most, playing in Harriott's quintet from start to finish and in other groups with him throughout the 1960s. In an interview for Kitty Grime's book Jazz at Ronnie Scott's he gave a very good analysis of Joe's music and an interesting look at what made Joe tick.

Joe Harriott Quintet...
I always felt Joe had a sort of death-wish, in a way. everything he did was self destructive - everything. Probably went right back to his beginnings. He was an orphan and he had almost no schooling, and it left him bitter. Probably felt everyone was against him. He seemed not to know who his friend were. Shake and I held the group together. When Pat Smythe wanted to leave we told him it was his duty to keep going. Amazing it lasted as long as it did.... Phil Seamen was a problem, sometimes you couldn't imagine he'd last another day...
Joe did everything with fantastic intensity, didn't do anything in moderation. You could just not argue with him, hardly hold a rational conversation with him. Once he'd got an idea it was like tunnel vision, reason meant nothing to him. In his playing he really got through to people - there was such a cry for love in his sound. Perhaps that was why he was so attractive to women. No one stayed for long, but there was no shortage of replacements. Playing, having a woman, having a drink - if that's having the main things in life, he'd got them. At one point...
Joe alienated most musicians in the end. If you wanted to befriend him, rang him up, he was never there, either at the pub getting drunk or in the betting shop - he was an intense gambler too. People got tired of the effort. He was so inflexible. He had very positive ideas...He knew exactly what he wanted - always! .......Coleridge Goode

Believed to be Joe Harriott's last recording date, this is a rather muddled attempt at a symphony with jazz soloists. It is not the record that Joe's army of fans will remember him by. Tom Lord's Jazz Discography gives the recording date as 1970 but this is incorrect. Simon Spillett points out that Dave Goldberg died on August 21st, 1969 and that this recording was made on August 8th, a few days before that date, at Watford Town Hall...
