Joe Temperley discography...
Born in 1929, Joe Temperley began playing locally and had a stint with the legendary Tommy Sampson band on alto sax. Moving to London, by now playing playing baritone and tenor saxes, he quickly became established and from 1952 to 1954 he was a sideman with Jack Parnell and then from 1955 to 1956 with Tommy Whittle, where his tenor solo opportunities, as expected, were somewhat limited. In 1958 he switched to baritone almost exclusively when he joined the mainstream band of Humphrey Lyttelton with whom he stayed until 1965 when he settled in New York.
He went on to play with the big bands of Woody Herman and Buddy Rich as well as other notable jazz stars such as Clark Terry and Duke Pearson. His style continued to progress and he did a considerable amount of studio, theatre and film work also playing with Woody Herman, Buddy Rich and Clark Terry. His hero had been Harry Carney and he eventually worked with the Duke Ellington Orchestra, then under the guidance of Mercer Ellington. He taught at the Manhattan School of Music and with the Lincoln Centre Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis.
Although he had a short 'modern' jazz career in Britain his work with Lyttelton was always interesting and he got plenty of opportunity to be heard. He is proof that the best British jazz musicians had the skill to make it in the toughest jazz environment of all. He died on May 11th, 2016.
The modern jazz of the 1950s that is now available on CD contains a few dates with Temperley as part of a sax section, but his major UK recording exposure came with the Humphrey Lyttelton band.

His help in supplying information on Joe's later US recordings has been invaluable...

Joe Temperley joined the mainstream band of Humphrey Lyttelton in 1958, when the latter expanded from a traditional jazz line-up. Temperley stayed with the band until he left for the USA in 1965 although he recorded again with Lyttelton in 1969. His "Mulliganesque" style of playing can be heard to good advantage on the Lyttelton records.
