The Late, Great Phil Seamen ...
Title: The Late Great Phil Seamen
Label: SWP Records Cat No: SWP037 Format: CD
Phil Seamen was arguably the greatest jazz drummer Europe has ever produced. He was up there, alongside such contemporaries as Kenny Clarke and Philly-Joe Jones - creative, and with a wonderful feel for time, a true personality with a recognisable sound and approach. A legend in his own lifetime, he died in 1972. This album of highlights of his playing is a salute that is long overdue.

Here he is featured in bands led by Jack Parnell, Victor Feldman, Joe Harriott, Dizzy Reece, Stan Tracey, Jimmy Witherspoon, Kenny Graham, Harold McNair, Ronnie Scott, Tony Coe. The tracks are from between 1953 and 1972, and have been lovingly remastered. The 24-page booklet is the first comprehensive history and expert evaluation of this extraordinary musician.

Phil Seamen's name appears on many pages of this website. I have not attempted a personal discography because he appeared on so many recording with so many people but much of the detail of his jazz record career can be seen in the following discographies: Ronnie Scott, Tommy Pollard, Victor Feldman, Dizzy Reece, Don Rendell, Jimmy Deuchar, Vic Ash, Harry Klein, Joe Harriott, Stan Tracey, Tubby Hayes, Kenny Graham, Jack Parnell, Kenny Baker, Ian Carr, Dick Morrissey.
