Johnny Rogers discography...
Pete Pitterson and Johnny Rogers at Club XI Pete Pitterson and Johnny Rogers
at Club Eleven
Born in Southgate, London in 1926 Johnny Rogers played clarinet as a teenager before turning to the alto sax and did local gigs with a group that included drummer Laurie Morgan. He had a dance band background including working with Nat Gonella before joining drummer Arthur Amey's Quartet at the Fullado Club, one of London's first jazz clubs in 1946. Work with the dance bands of Johnny Kerrison, Eric Siddons and Harry Java, followed through 1947 before he became a founder member of Club Eleven in 1948. Serious illness kept him out of action in 1949 but resumed playing in 1950 in Jazz Incorporated a group he co-led with Lennie Metcalfe. He worked with Freddy Randall in 1953 and for a time had his own group that included Kathy Stobart and drummer Bill Eyden. After this it was back to the dance band scene with Joe Loss but in 1955 he settled in Redcar, Yorkshire and played locally, sometimes with his own group and freelanced until 1973 when he quit the music business to run his own farm in Yorkshire.
Johnny Rogers is interesting historically because he played a part in the formation of Club Eleven in 1948. As a regular at Club Eleven he has to be regarded as one of the 'founding fathers' of British modern jazz. He died on 4th, January 2016 at the age of 89.
