Duncan Lamont...
Duncan Lamont was born in Greenock, Scotland in July 1931. He originally played trumpet and a band led by him won an award in a Melody Maker competition in 1951. He moved to London and played trumpet with Kenny Graham for several months before returning to Scotland to play in local bands, during this period switching to tenor sax.
In May 1953 he joined the Ivor and Basil Kirchin Band in Edinburgh and later Ireland. He stayed with the band for a year and then worked with other name bands including Ken Mackintosh, Jack Parnell, Geraldo, Eric Delaney before joining Vic Lewis in 1958 in time for a USA tour.

Following this he formed a quartet and played with other groups led by Ray Premru, Pat Smythe (1961), Kenny Baker (1960 and 1962), and Johnny Scott (1953-54). He then undertook extensive studio and freelance work, (now playing clarinet and flute as well as tenor), toured Europe with Benny Goodman and played in various UK big bands as well as some TV work. He led his own big band from the 1970s through to the 1990s and played in Kenny Wheeler's big band in 1990. Following illness in the mid 1990s he resumed regular playing and freelance work.

The discography below contains full details of the small group recordings that Duncan Lamont made plus 'one off' big bands. He made big band records with the Johnny Dankworth Orchestra and the Tony Kinsey big band where solo opportunities were more limited and a link is given to the detail of these records.
