Born in London in 1928 Harry Klein began playing the alto sax in local gigs in the mid 1940s and also with the Ivor Kirchin Band and the Victor Feldman Sextet. Still playing alto worked on the Mauritania sailing to New York which was where he met Charlie Parker and heard him playing with Fats Navarro. Although invited to sit in he never did!He played with a number of name bands in the early 1950s including Jack Nathan, Kenny Baker, Tony Crombie, Ronnie Scott and Jack Parnell. He switched from alto to baritone sax while playing with Jack Nathan in 1950. He was a reluctant convert, Jack Nathan bought him as instrument and he quickly decided that he got a better sound on the baritone than any other instrument and started to like it. So he became a baritone player and stated that he got a lot more work than he would have done playing alto. The Jazz Five... |
He played in a quintet with Tommy Whittle on and off through the 1950s as well as the Jazz Today Unit. He was not one of the bebop pioneers, and besides his jazz work spent time with commercial bands like Geraldo, Ambrose, Roy Fox and Eric Jupp but he felt that the baritone in dance bands was often regarded as a bit of a novelty instrument, but he adapted his style well to fit into the modern sounding bands of the early 1950s. In 1956 he played six weeks with Stan Kenton's big band touring Europe and recorded with the band in Stockholm. In the early 1960s he co-led a successful quintet with Vic Ash called The Jazz Five that often played at Ronnie Scott's and was recorded in 1960. In 1962 he formed his own quartet but increasingly became a session musician working mainly in the studios and on radio or TV. He continued to do a few jazz dates as well as his commercial work. He worked with singers Johnny Mathis, Barbra Streisand, Tony Bennett, Sammy Davis, Buddy Greco and Ella Fitzgerald as well as pop groups the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and pop singer Dusty Springfield. His favourite players were Harry Carney, Pepper Adams and Gerry Mulligan and he based his sound on Gerry Mulligan but, not surprisingly, he lacked Mulligan's technical and improvisational abilities. Due to back problems he gave up the baritone in the mid 1990s and reverted to the alto. He died on 30th June, 2010 at the age of 81. During the fifties when the Melody Maker concerned itself with jazz, Harry Klein was voted the number 1 British baritone player by the readers from 1953 to 1957, and in 1955 he came third in the international section, just behind Gerry Mulligan and Lars Gullin. Harry made a lot of records in this period and was a regular on the London club scene where many of his votes would have come from. |

This session does not appear in Kenny Baker discographies although several titles on this CD have been recorded on other dates. The booklet with the CD says only that they are studio recordings made in the mid - 1950s. It does not say who made the original recordings, presumably it is a record company but may even be the BBC, the dozen had a regular late night programme on the BBC at the time...
