Dave Cliff took up the guitar at age fourteen and a few years later was playing gigs around Newcastle where he was brought up. He spent four years at the Leeds College of Music (1967-1970) before moving to London in 1971.During the 1970s he worked with Chas Burchell and Peter Ind and toured with Warne Marsh and Lee Konitz and from 1972 to 1975 was with Tommy Chase. He recorded in Copenhagen and Rome with Warne Marsh and Lee Konitz and in 1977 worked with Bob Wilber in the USA in 1977 as well as playing TV dates in Israel. During the 1980s he worked as a guitar teacher as well as working freelance and recording with a wide range of musicians including Bruce Turner, Humphrey Lyttelton, Alan Barnes, Mike Carr, Tony Coe, Brian Lemon plus Americans Warren Vache, Kenny Davern and Bob Wilber. During the 1990s he accompanied visiting musicians including Lee Konitz,Ruby Braff and Kenny Davern. Over the years he has worked frequently with a quintet co-led with alto saxist Geoff Simkins.
