Born in Newcastle Emlyn, South Wales in 1923 Dill Jones began playing when he was seven years old. He became a skilfull pianist who played jazz from 1942 to 1946 while serving in the Royal Navy. After world War II he studied at Trinity College of Music in London and began playing London gigs. He turned professional in 1947 joining Vic Lewis in 1948 then with Harry Parry 1949 - 1950 and Kathy Stobart also in 1950. During the 1950s he was associated with all the local bop based musicians - he had played in Tony Kinsey's Trio in 1953, played with Joe Harriott, and had also been a key member of the Tommy Whittle quintet from April 1954 until September 1956. He also gigged with Don Rendell, Ronnie Scott and Jimmy Skidmore as well as introducing jazz programmes for the BBC.From 1959 - 1961 he led his own trio and also worked with the Bert Courtley Sextet but following a decade as one of London's busiest and most adaptable jazzmen Jones moved permanently to New York in October 1961, working with mainstream musicians such as Roy Eldridge, Max Kaminsky, Gene Krupa and Roy Eldridge, becoming a much respected member of the New York jazz community. He recorded with most of the top British jazz musicians as well as leading a few recording sessions under his own name. He returned to the UK for a visit in 1983 but died of throat cancer in 1984 at the age of sixty. |
Dill Jones made few records in Britain under his own name. Perhaps his finest was the 1959 EP recorded by the enterprising Denis Preston at Lansdowne studios, Dill Jones Plus Four. Anyone lucky enough to own this record will hear not only Jones' urbane piano style on themes by Duke Jordan and Sonny Rollins, but also the lyrical eloquence of tenor saxophonist Duncan Lamont. Dill did not recognise stylistic barriers but simply loved good jazz. His knowledge was such that he could play any style from stride piano to modern jazz. Although ultimately a minor figure in the British modern jazz scene he did make many recordings as a sideman and his individual style can be heard in many groups from the 1950s He emigrated to the US in 1961 and continued to record until December 1983. The Dixieland record listed below is an unlikely record to include in a modern jazz website as the personnel are more known for their exploits as modern jazz musicians. Make no mistake though this is genuine sounding Dixieland... Jazz musicians are used to reviewers being less than enthusiastic about their recording efforts but the review about this record that appeared in the August 1961 edition of 'Gramophone', spotted by Richard Hazlewood, is just plain spiteful... "This band consists of local musicians of quite definitely modernist leanings.... Fair enough. If a man wants to be a staunch supporter of a political faction, his right to do so should be defended to the death. I cannot, though, for the life of me imagine why this bunch should want to go "slumming", to cross over into an idiom with which they're almost entirely unfamiliar. Noisy, protracted drum solos, raucous ensemble passages, a dull rhythm section-these, whoever perpetrates them, are not going to commend themselves to my ears. Easily the best track on the LP is the Ellington-type original by Dill Jones, Gone Tomorrow; the worst track is undoubtedly the cacophonous Struttin' With Some Barbecue". B.R. (Brian Rust maybe)...
