Eddie Harvey was born in Blackpool in 1925. After studying classical piano as a child he played the trombone as a
teenager and became a pioneer of the traditional jazz revival in the 1940's when he joined George Webb's Dixielanders from 1943 to 1946. After National Service with the RAF he worked with Freddy Randall before moving to modern jazz after playing with Vic Lewis' Kenton type band in 1950.He was a founder member of the ground breaking Johnny Dankworth Seven in 1950 and remained with Dankworth when he formed his big band in 1953 and stayed with him until the mid 1950s. Thereafter he worked with many leading jazz musicians including Don Rendell and Humphrey Lyttelton when he often doubled on piano as well as composing and arranging. He returned to the Dankworth Orchestra in the early 1960s. As one of Great Britain�s foremost jazz instrumentalists, he toured opposite the famous Gerry Mulligan and Modern Jazz Quartets. Eventually he went on to play with American bands including Woody Herman and Maynard Ferguson, and to write music for the Benny Goodman Orchestra. He also wrote for Jack Parnell's ATV Orchestra. |
During the 1960�s he qualified as a teacher and was appointed as assistant master (music) at Haileybury College, Hertford. During this period he also directed Summer Schools for the Jazz Centre Society and conducted an Arts Council tour performing Tony Coe�s major composition "Zeitgeist". During his time at Haileybury he developed the distinct but related ideas for teaching jazz in education and education in jazz. He left the school in 1984 to concentrate on putting these ideas into practice. He subsequently worked for the Arts Council of Great Britain and many County Music Authorities providing INSET training for teachers, working in colleges and schools and eventually sitting as a member of the Music Panel of the Arts Council for a number of years. From 1985 to 2003 he was Head of Jazz Studies at the London College of Music and Director of the London College Big Band. In 2004 he taught at the Royal College of Music and directed their big band. From 1990, Eddie played a significant part in designing the Royal Schools of Music Jazz Piano examinations and syllabus as well as providing piano, ensemble and trombone pieces for the curriculum. He is also an external examiner for the Trinity College of Music. Through the early 2000s he continued to write complex works for large and small orchestras. He died in October, 2012. Eddie Harvey made his recording debut in 1944 with George Webb's Dixielanders in a band that included Wally Fawkes when they recorded seven titles for the Jazzology label. four further recording dates followed through 1945 with a final date in November, 1946. In 1948 he recorded with the Freddy Randall band for the Cleveland label and with the same band in 1949 for Tempo.In late 1949 Vic Lewis enlarged his orchestra to nineteen pieces along the lines of Stan Kenton's powerhouse band. The billing now became "The Vic Lewis Music for Moderns Orchestra". the orchestra had a contract with EMI who released their records on the Parlophone label. The recordings created considerable interest because of their pioneering use of echo, which as Vic explained in his book, was produced by very primitive methods. The orchestra contained many of the top British jazz musicians of the period and the music it played was very advanced. The Kenton style was now established and the band played a high proportion of arrangements by the Kenton arranger Pete Rugolo. On the July 31st date above a track was recorded for the German Jazz Colours label. It was by the Joe Temperley Quintet, Joe's first record under his own name, and the quintet comprised Temperley, Surman, Harvey, Green and Levin, all of whom played on the Lyttelton date. The title recorded was Cottontail. The rest of the CD was by other groups and was not released in the UK... On May 9th, 1974 The Humphrey Lyttelton band recorded a live concert at Lutjensee (near Hamburg) for the German Happy Bird label. The band comprised: Humphrey Lyttelton (tp), Chris Pyne (tb), Ray Warleigh (as), Tony Coe (ts), Joe Temperley (bs), Eddie Harvey (p), Dave Green (b), Tony Levin (d). The resulting record was not released in the UK...
