Tony Crombie - 1...
Born in Bishopsgate, London in 1925, Tony Crombie was a fine self taught drummer, composer and arranger as well as a talented, but occasional, pianist and vibraphonist. He began playing in wartime clubs at the age of sixteen, Mazurka Club (1941), and Number One Rhythm Club before joining Carlo Krahmer in 1943. Following work with Tito Burns and Johnny Claes in the mid 1940s he toured with Duke Ellington in 1948 as part of Jack Fallon's Trio before becoming a founder member of Club Eleven, the birth place of British modern jazz, in the same year. The Club had two bands and Crombie was part of the Ronnie Scott group as well as forming his own Septet.
He features on many early modern jazz recording from the early 1950s often in the company of Ronnie Scott and worked with many of the modern jazz pioneers including Tommy Pollard and Victor Feldman. He spent two and a half years from 1953 with the renowned Ronnie Scott Orchestra as well as accompanying Ella Fitzgerald, Tony Bennett and Lena Horne on their UK tours during the 1950s. He led his own jazz groups in the mid 1950s and also in 1956 a rock and roll band called the Rockets

He led another band as Tony Crombie and his Men in 1958 and in 1959 he formed Jazz Inc which included Bobby Wellins and Stan Tracey. Jazz Inc survived for just 17 weeks but although a commercial failure it was reckoned by fans and critics to be a major musical success. He rejoined Ronnie Scott in 1960 working for a time as house drummer at Scott's club where he appeared with many American musicians through the 1960s.

As the audience for jazz diminished through the 1960s Crombie worked with rock musicians Alan Haven, Mike Carr and Georgie Fame through into the 1970s. Much travelled as a leader he worked with a quartet in Monte Carlo (1960), Israel (1963), and bookings with organist Alan Haven in Las Vegas (1964 -67). He also worked with pianist Alan Clare and collaborated with him on a number of compositions. He continued on a free-lance basis through the 1980s and 1990s with arranging and composing for TV and films among his band leading and other musical activities.

Following Crombie's death in 1999 Jeff Kruger, who ran a talent management agency and founded the Flamingo Club and also acted as Crombie's manager, said of him:
When I first met Tony (early 1950s), he was the drummer in the Ronnie Scott Band and was not the sort of person to play a supporting role all his life. A loud, brash forceful player, with an offbeat personality, the cheery Eastender who smoked through a cigarette holder while he played had much to offer. However, a lack of faith in himself had made him reluctant to strike out on his own. I humbly say that I contributed to the development of Tony's career and say that I helped encourage him in areas, such as composition and his use of the piano when he would rather have slipped another cigarette in his holder and just played drums - a task at which he excelled...
Kruger had a long association with Crombie and helped turn his rock band into a major attraction on the pop music scene. They went to the top of the hit parade and starred in major TV shows. However Crombie's roots were in jazz and as the rock scene faded he returned to Ronnie Scott's and the Flamingo. He was a great talent - undiscovered by the mass market, but always a credit to the British music scene and one of the jazz world's long unsung heroes. A creative talent of magnitude and a man and musician and artist to respect.

Tony Crombie - 2

Tony Crombie Orchestra:
Tony Crombie formed his first eight piece band in 1954, Keith Goodwin writing in Jazz Journal in 1955 described it:
...as too wild and blary to interest the real jazz lover, although it won a large public following. The music was loud and exciting with honking 'rhythm and blues' style solos with blaring, ragged unison passages from the brass. By mid 1955 the band had increased to ten and the personnel was largely replaced, only Les Condon remaining from the old band. With this change of personnel came a change in policy. The music was still exciting loud jazz with a fiery big co-ordinated sound. The band has verve and spirit, and above all they play jazz with a beat. The music is exciting, bold and loud and although primarily Tony sets out to play "hot" jazz, one can always detect traces of the "cool" influence. For some time Tony sought a suitable lead trumpet, until he found Jimmy Deuchar - probably the greates horn man in Europe today. Playing alongside Deuchar probably served as inspiration to Les Condon for he improved beyond recognition, and today the pair form a really powerful brass team. The band started as an eight piece but Ken Wray and Derek Humble joined following the break up of the Ronnie Scott band. The band has a host of talented arrangers - Rendell and Ross for the small group numbers and Deuchar, Robinson, Condon and Crombie himself contributed no end of scores to the band library.
There can be no doubt that the solo playing would also have been vastly improved.
Both versions of the Tony Crombie Orchestra recorded and the full line up's can be seen from the discography below.
The second band also featured two contrasting groups from within the band - Derek Humble, Ken Wray and Jimmy Deuchar formed the front line of one, Don Rendell and Ronnie Ross provided a cooler sound in the other. (The second band also had a young Annie Ross as vocalist who became one of the bands main attractions. During 1955 Crombie and Ross made a number of records together).

Tribute to Tony Crombie CD Tony Crombie

The Ember Tribute CD compiled by Jeff Kruger is a major disappointment. It contains 25 tracks, representing Tony Crombie's jazz, rock and film careers, but contains no information whatever about recording dates, bands/orchestras or musicians. It contains some obscure Israeli broadcast tapes and one track that sounds like the Glenn Miller Band. Some of the record quality is very poor and the whole compilation seems to have been based on what Ember could find in their library. A musician of Crombie's stature deserved a much better epitaph than this.
I have attempted to find discographical data for the jazz tracks and this is detailed below, but there are still areas of doubt.

If anybody can add anything about this CD please contact me at david@henrybebop.co.uk
This discography covers Tony Crombie's jazz records only. This listing includes details of the record dates by Crombie's own bands or where he was the nominal session leader. Also included, where known, are the jazz tracks from the Ember tribute CD. Crombie made many records as a sideman, particularly for Ronnie Scott. Jimmy Deuchar Quartet - October 4th, 1955 (Esquire) - recording details: Jimmy Deuchar

In late 1955 Tony Crombie led his Orchestra, including vocalist Annie Ross on a ground breaking trip to Israel. The band and Annie Ross received a rapturous welcome with sell out concerts at all venues. A number of broadcasts were made on Israel Radio and several of the titles have been issued on an Ember CD. The CD is a bit of a mystery and contains no details at all. For the two vocals, aural evidence suggests that Annie Ross is accompanied by Tony Crombie on piano and Lennie Bush on bass, with a muted trumpet solo on "Don't Worry About Me".
